If you like futuristic action-thrillers, this one is "good enough" entertainment in a similar vein to Hunger Games. Like Hunger Games, it portrays a society that has reinvented itself and, in an attempt to control the dark side of human nature, has established strict controls. It created 5 groups of personality types based on human virtues, which perform strict functions within the community. I found the idea more interesting than the movie.
The five types are:
The Abnegators (to give up rights or claim, the selfless ones)--in this society, the Abnegators RULED because they believed that serving their community's needs were more important than their personal ones.
The Erudites (the intelligensia--the thinkers)--in this society, they performed the analytical and science work of running a culture. In this story they plotted to take over the government from the Abnegators.
The Amity (peaceful, passive)-this group just did "farm work" and seemed happy with their tasks.
The Dauntless (brave and fearless ones)--in this society, they functioned as Police and soldiers to provide security and order. They were eventually transformed into performing the will of the Erudites through science.
The Candor (truth-speakers)--this subculture was tasked with exposing the other factions to themselves and others and showing them how their natures could become perverted (ie the other side of the coin to the superficial virtues of each faction--a mirror.
There are, however, 2 more groups that were NOT purposely created by the Creators. No one chooses to be in either of these groups:
The "Divergents" (exceptions, different)-these people were either killed when exposed or banned from the gated city. Their psychological profiles were "inconclusive"; unfortunately, the only ones who knew about the test results were the designers and administrators of the science of testing--the Erudites!
The "Factionless"--these were the outright rejects of the other Factions--for various reasons--the rejects--they live in poverty and perform the scut work of the society. They are the majority population in this dystopian world. Most of the Factionless are known to be "Divergents" who do not fit in with any Faction.
I give this movie a Thumbs UP if you like this kind of a concept as "entertainment".
The five types are:
The Abnegators (to give up rights or claim, the selfless ones)--in this society, the Abnegators RULED because they believed that serving their community's needs were more important than their personal ones.
"I choose to turn away from my reflection, to rely not on myself but on my brothers and sisters, to project always outward until I disappear."
The Erudites (the intelligensia--the thinkers)--in this society, they performed the analytical and science work of running a culture. In this story they plotted to take over the government from the Abnegators.
"Ignorance is defined not as stupidity but as lack of knowledge. Lack of knowledge inevitably leads to lack of understanding. Lack of understanding leads to a disconnect among people with differences. Disconnection among people with differences leads to conflict. Knowledge is the only logical solution to the problem of conflict. Therefore, we propose that in order to eliminate conflict, we must eliminate the disconnect among those with differences by correcting the lack of understanding that arises from ignorance with knowledge."
The Amity (peaceful, passive)-this group just did "farm work" and seemed happy with their tasks.
"Give freely, trusting that you will be given what you need... Do not be angry. The opinions of others cannot damage you... The wrong is past. You must let it rest where it lies... You must no longer think cruel thoughts. Cruel thoughts lead to cruel words, and hurt you as much as they hurt their target."
The Dauntless (brave and fearless ones)--in this society, they functioned as Police and soldiers to provide security and order. They were eventually transformed into performing the will of the Erudites through science.
"We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another... We believe in shouting for those who can only whisper, in defending those who cannot defend themselves."
"Truth makes us transparent. Truth makes us strong. Truth makes us inextricable."

“You’re different. You don’t fit into a category. They can’t control you. They call it Divergent. The system removes the threat of anyone exercising their independent will. Divergents threaten that system. It won’t be safe until they’re removed.”
