President’s Message May 17, 2017
Since many of our Board members are out of the resort, at the present time and because we were able to approve many of the decisions which we saw upcoming, at our April meeting, it was agreed that we did not need to hold a Board meeting in May. Management and staff have been busy carrying out many of the repairs and upgrades that we had anticipated. They are very faithful about consulting with the Board on decisions that need to be made and keeping us informed about the activities within the resort.
Most of us “snowbirds” have returned to our northern homes. We have picked up the thread of the lives that we have lived for several decades. We have been reunited with our families and friends, perhaps returned to clubs, organizations and churches which have been part of our lives over all that time.
My wife, Nunsee and I have have been dividing our time between our home in Ontario, Canada and our winter vacation spot in Florida for about 10 years now. The time spent in S-bag has been growing over the years until we are now spending almost half of the year in our Florida home. We have become aware of some changes that have taken place in our lives as we now are spending less time in the place where we spent the majority of our lives.
One of the things that we have enjoyed most about our Florida winters has been the adventure of starting something new. We have found a sense of freedom and excitement in a fresh start. We are doing different things, our priorities have changed, we feel rejuvenated. Our stays in S-bag have allowed us to meet new people, people who come from all over the US and Canada, from all walks of life. They bring with them a patch-work of abilities and experiences. They come from varied circumstances and social statuses but the wonderful thing about S-bag is that those differences don’t need to matter. Who we have been, our successes and our failures, none of that is important. We get to start again on equal terms.
Some of you will have also recognized that by choosing the S-bag life, some sacrifices have been made. We have chosen to separate ourselves from some of the social circles, clubs, organizations, churches and even families which once were held as top priorities. These are choices which not everyone is willing to make and these choices can cause resentment among those who may feel abandoned by our decision to refocus our lives.
Nunsee and I have lived in the same Ontario community for over forty years. We have lived close to our families there and we have spent our working lives in the area. We’ve been part of organizations and a church in the area. We have raised our family there and along the way we have made many very close life-long friends. This is the core of who we and these are things that we would not want to change. But over the last ten years, as we have gotten better acquainted with our S-bag community, we have established some very close friendships here as well. We feel as close to some of them as if we had known them all our lives.
This dual loyalty can be a bit difficult to accommodate and it is easy to understand those who do not choose this lifestyle. But for those of us who have, it can be a perfect balance of the old and the new.
