The Year-Rounders May 29, 2017
Last time, I related some of the details about how, my wife, Nunsee and I have evolved into extended stay property owners, here in S-bag. That got me thinking a bit more about the residency situations of some of the rest of the people who own or rent property in S-bag. This, I think, is an important consideration as we seek to understand the needs and
expectations of our fellow owners.
This resort has managed to retain, over the years, its diversified character. We have a variety of dwellings. Most are well kept but they include everything from 1970’s trailers with Florida rooms to brand new doublewides. By having this range of properties side-by-side, in our resort, we have maintained much of the original flavor of the place and I believe that we have been able to preserve a fairly class-free community. That is pretty special.
While a majority of our S-bag population continues to see this resort as a winter “home-away-from-home” and I believe that was the vision which saw the establishment of the resort, in the early 1970’s, some of our population has decided to make S-bag their year-round home.
There are several reasons that this population has been growing. For one thing, our S-bag homes have become more well appointed with comforts such as central air conditioning, multiple bedrooms and baths. Secondly, the fact is that for those Americans who choose to relocate to Florida, S-bag can be a very inexpensive place to live.
The trend toward year-round residency in S-bag has increased dramatically over the past few years and this trend has important implications for the future of the resort. While most of these permanent residents are fully invested in the events and actives which descend upon them each year, from November through April, some prefer the peaceful quiet of the “off season”. There is less traffic in the resort. Amenities are easily accessible within the resort and restaurants and highways, in the surrounding area, are much less crowded.
My wife, Nunsee and I have spent extended periods of time here in the summer months. It is a very different place. You have to be able to escape the heat but with air conditioning and the beautiful pool, I could easily call S-bag my year-round home. Because of US immigration laws, this option is not available to Canadians. Year-round residents must be US citizens.
The fact that S-bag has become a permanent home for more of our owners, has important implications for the choices that owners support and the future direction that the resort takes. Consider the issue of reducing trash pick-up to once a week. In the heat of summer that notion might not get much support. The idea of returning to “pay for consumption” water charges, on the other hand, is something that seasonal residents have sometimes proposed.
More next time.
