Lake Wales Wireless: The system has been down since 1:29 PM Saturday. The 2 phone numbers we had are now “Not a Working Number." Therefore, we have no way to contact them.
Lake Wales Wireless: LWW has gone out of business. Bb St aib Jr. has been working the telephone to figure how to get some internet hookup here at SLR.
SLR Koffee Klatch 06/07/2010 Internet Addendum
This Koffee Klatch Addendum contains a written recap of the presentation presented at Koffee Klatch on Monday 06/07/2010 covering the Wireless Internet situation in S-bag.
The following contains a recap of the main issues. At the end of this document is a link to a recording that was made of this presentation. It should only be accessed by people with high speed internet and will not be viewable on dialup. The session lasts a little oven an hour.
1. Lake Wales Wireless announced last week that they have gone out of business as of 1:30pm on Saturday May 30, 2010.
2. Why ? There was a storm near S-bag that struck the tower at the corner of Florida Rte 60 and Sam Kean Road. Over $20,000 damage was done to equipment in that tower equipment room and Lake Wales Wireless management did not feel they could afford to repair/replace this equipment. Thus they were out of business with no warning.
3. Many people who had paid them in advance have asked me if they get a refund.
a. I have no relationship with Lake Wales Wireless except that I was a customer just like you and I cannot give any refund.
b. My best guess is that the odds of a refund are not high. BUT I would suggest that you send them a letter at P.O. Box 701, Lake Wales, Fl 33853 and request a refund of the amount you had paid in advance. My understanding is that if you paid in advance, you are a creditor and three creditors can put a company into involuntary bankruptcy. The reward will probably not be worth the cost, but the choice is yours.
4. Many of us are not surprised that LWW failed. Their customer relations and general business practices offered a lot to be desired. But, that is in the past and it is time to move on.
The Future
We have tried to prepare a rapid plan that achieves the following goals
1. Get the old WiFi distribution system inside the Resort back up and running with a new internet feed.
2. Get started on a permanent solution that will provide top quality services at a minimum cost.
An analysis of the alternatives and their costs shows that the best long term solution is to wire the entire resort with fiber and provide a high speed ethernet connection to every stump in the Resort. On this system we can provide internet, telephone and digital television services. But the timing is not immediate. Thus it does not provide relief from the immediate problem.
*If all went perfectly an fiber distribution system could be operational this fall. But a more realistic timetable is the Fall of 2011, assuming that this upgrade will require shareholder voting.
I have talked about the best possible pricing senario to make sure our residents know what the choices really are.
it is possible to achieve the following price plateaus.
1. $10.00/mo wired internet connection
2. $15.00/mo additional charge for 1 digital telephone line (for a total of $25.00/mo)
3. $25.00/mo additional charge for approximately 120 channels of digital TV (for a total of $50.00 per month.
I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN.
For example. We are talking to Bright House Networks about wiring the Resort. They have already told us it will cost the $1,200.000 to wire the project. I believe this is a highly inflated number, but id we assume right now that they agree to absorb the entire cost. Their standard price for the above set of services is about $100/mo. This $100/mo is not a new cost, you will save any internet cost you are now spending, you will save any telephone cost you are now spending and you will save any satellite TV cost you are now spending. Current costs are typically $10 to $62 for internet, $30 to $40 for telephone and $60 to 90 fort TV. This your total is some were between $100 and $192 / mo for the same services.
Obviously we would all prefer to get these services for $50.00/mo not $100.00/mo. How do we do that? Answer get our own system. We have obtained verbal installation quotations of $400,000 , $800,000 and $1,200,00 from three parties. To be clear I HAVE NEVER PROPOSED THAT SLohA PAY THIS FROM OUR BANK ACCOUNT. We have another currency to offer up to 790 users and a multi-year contract. Both the $800,000 and $400,000 estimate came from companies who indicated they were prepared to fund the installation in exchange for a multi-year contract. No more meaningful detail is available at this time except to say that all I am doing is attempting to negotiate a reasonable set of alternatives so our Board and/or shareholders can make a decision. Or maybe we would prefer to continue paying $150+ and not have any internet. In the meantime am trying to get the old system back "on the air" so we can buy the time we need to do it right.
One last subject. Some people have purchased Verizon Air Cards in an attempt to get back on the internet. My experience has been that the Verizon speed has dropped in half in the last week. I called them to find out how soon they can increase the capacity of our cellphone tower. Answer: Don't expect better performance before March 2011. If you have an Air Card on a 30 day trial you might want to think about returning it while you can. I don't forecast a pretty pictures when everybody comes back and their additional Air Cards are connected to our tower. Watch the video for more detail. If you buy an Air card now the speed and connection will seem pretty good most of the time, but as the load grows it will steadily get worse. To call the present Air Card speed "BAD" you have to have seen it two weeks ago. Two weeks ago download speeds of 2500 to 2900 kb were common and upload speeds of 1200kb were common. Now you are lucky to get 1200kb down and 400 kb up ... and, it will only get worse.

SLR Koffee Klatch 06/15/2010 Internet Addendum
This Koffee Klatch Addendum contains a written recap of the presentation presented at Koffee Klatch on Monday 06/15/2010 covering the Wireless Internet situation in S-bag.
The following contains a recap of the main issues. At the end of this document is a link to a recording that was made of this presentation. It should only be accessed by people with high speed internet and will not be viewable on dialup.
1. I met with a representative from Bright House Communications last week. He stated that it would cost Bright House $1,200,000 to wire our Resort so they could provide fiber based internet, telephone and television services. After a lengthy discussion we learned that approximately $500,000 of this cost would be incurred outside of S-bag and $700,000 inside. His proposal to S-bag was that every homeowner pay $500 so we could contribute $400,000 toward the project. I explained that the concept of getting 100% of Saddlebagers to agree to anything was impossible and suggested that he already knew that before his proposal. Conversation turned to a more practical way to meet their needs and our goals. Bright House presently has 43 customers inside S-bag and we discussed that this was because of their antique analog TV system. I suggested that we prepare a questionnaire for interested parties to complete which would indicate their interest in receiving a fiber based internet, telephone and TV suite of products. We discussed that if approximately 422 people indicated a desire for service that would change their "mathematical model" 's recommendation from not practical to practical. But the timing is not immediate and will offer no chance of solving the internet availability problem this fall. If fact it will probably take two years. So, I have put this project on the back burner for a few weeks and I am concentrating on other ways of solving the current internet crisis.
2. Last week Kn Sooner received a phone call from Mr. Currl Fish who announced that he had purchased the assets of Lake Wales Wireless and he could turn our internet system back on in three days if we signed a contract to pay $4,600 per month for 12 months. Mr Sooner called me and I have had several conversations with Mr. Fish during the last week. At yesterday's Koffee Klatch I explained that the proposed "deal" cost more than $50,000 and was out of the question for Board action before the next election. I also was very concerned with the legality of Mr. Fish's purchase and was concerned that if we started to use the old LWW WiFi distribution system a Bankruptcy filing by LWW might put our whole recovery plan in limbo, and at a time when we had no alternatives. I told everyone that I did not think Mr. Fish's plan had a chance of solving our problem.
Subsequent Change: I talked to Mr. Fish again today (Tuesday) in an attempt to get him to offer a more short term solution and one that the Board might be able to afford. It was then, that I learned that he HAD NOT purchased Lake Wales Wireless and that he was just looking at the possible purchase. So, Mr. Fish's offer was never real and offers no chance of solving our problem.
3. We have very little time to act if we are going to solve this problem this fall. I have completed a design of a new distribution system which would not involve using any of the old LWW system hardware except for the towers which belong to SLohA. Parts and installation of a new dual Wi-Fi and Wimax distribution system would cost just under $20,000 and would work with the antennas presently located at 153 homes inside the Resort. The new system would place only antennas on the towers and all electronics would be at eye level on the ground, protected by lightning arrestors and could be repaired without climbing the towers. This system would be robust enough to feed internet to every home in the Resort (if they purchase a receiving antenna) and would be MUCH easier to maintain. I am willing to fund the purchase of the internet feed to the system, charge users approximately $40.00 per month on a 12 month per year contract or $42.00 per month on a 6 month contract. Download and upload speeds would be approximately 3000 kb. There would be no billing statements and payments would be made via credit card on a web site I presently operate. The $20,000 equipment cost includes a supply of spare parts so the mean time to repair should be kept to a minimum in the event of storm damage. (except for damage to the towers). The new system would support VOIP telephones so those who use Vonage, Voipo or Skype would get good performance. Any hesitations would come from the external internet not from in the Resort equipment.
If the Bright House project is ultimately not feasible, an additional performance upgrade could be installed next year with the addition of a higher speed internet feed from T3 Communications. Such a feed is not possible this year because it will take 6 months to install due to political issues with the City of Lake Wales needing to approve installation of antennas on a water tower downtown to act as an intermediate hop between Winter Hayvn and S-bag.
4. At the Koffee Klatch I explained that I had asked Mr. Lws to pass on to the Board my request for a $20,000 Grnt from the Board to cover the needed hardware and installation. I said that I would repay the $20,000 over the next two seasons out of "profits" from the monthly payments received from users. I explained that I regard Mr. Lws as a friend and, as friends do, Kn advised me that he really did not believe there was support on the Board for getting involved in solving the internet problem. He suggested that he thought the Board sentiment was to purchase a T1 internet feed for the office (for about $650/mo) and to leave everyone else fend for themselves. I hope he was wrong because I believe that is a terribly short sighted view of our needs.
I reminded folks of how it was years ago when there were only a couple of pay phones in the Resort and how it took homeowner demands to cause the Board to do something to resolve the problem and get phone service at every home. I suggest that those who feel that it is time for S-bag to have a Resort wide internet system to contact the Board and let their feelings be known. I am willing to design, install, maintain, and run such a system in a professional manner. But I do want the Board to provide more than lip service to the project. And, I want Saddlebagers to let the level of their need for internet be known before proceeding with the project. If there is going to be Resort wide internet available this October, we need to order the radio equipment and internet feed circuits by July 15, 2010. The internet feed circuits are from Qwest Wholesale and the "local loop" from downtown to the Resort is installed by Verizon Communications and takes 45 to 60 days after order. We need to make up our minds very soon.
For those who think I am proposing this action to put myself into the internet business I assure you it was my last desire. If this problem is going to be solved, many of us are going to have to do some things we would prefer not to do. This includes me who would prefer not to work on this project, the Board who would prefer not to spend any money, and the many users who would prefer to only pay for internet for 3 months a year not 6. Those who would prefer to "borrow" a signal form a neighbor are just just going to have to pay like everyone else. The numbers require the above outlined plan to make it work. The S-bag Office, SLR Maintenance Dept, and CHUG need to become paying subscribers to the system. I see no reason why the past CHUG free internet feed to short term CHUG members who take their laptops to the annex or pool area cannot be maintained. AND, with the new system design, good speed internet should be available 99.9% of the time to users who help pay to defer the cost. The only other alternative is to have everybody buy Verizon Air Cards and have the load of 200+ Air Cards hit the Verizon Tower this fall. For those who remember when the load of 80 customers hit the LWW system in October of 2007 (also designed to support 25 users at the time ) the result was not pretty.
I'll do my part to see we all have good internet service if you do your part to make it happen..

Internet Connection: As of last Friday, the website, www.lakewaleswireless.com has disappeared. For those of you with an email address of lakewaleswireless.com you will need to change to something else. Bb St aib announced that the new internet system is fully operational with a commercial internet feed from Qwest that exceeds the speed of the old system. In a few weeks this feed will become our backup and a new much higher speed internet connection will become our primary feed. The new system was designed to feed 3200 customers so even if every S-bag resident subscribes it will be able to handle the load with no difficulty. Multiple crews will start installing customer antennas TODAY. So, if your name is not on the install list and you want service please call Ginnie St aib at 863-215-7988 or you can reach Bb or Ginnie at home in the evening at 863-696-3217. If you have called previously, there is no need to call again. Service is free until September 1. You will need to sign up for pay service on our website in late August to subscribe to the pay service after September. We will announce (here) when the sign up page is available on the website. There will be a subscriber agreement that must be accepted and the price will be approximately $40/mo depending on the length of your subscription. More on this in a couple of weeks.
From Aug 30, 2010 KK:
Editor Note: Contrary to assertions, business was conducted at 28 GH (receiving payments) and, as we all are aware, you won't be turned away if you bring your check or cash to the door to pay your fee!
Internet Connection: 1. Bb said that as far as we know all people who have asked for service and who are now in residence are now connected. If you are presently in residence at S-bag and want the new service PLEASE contact Bb immediately as the rest of August and all of September will be spent installing systems at homes of people who are coming back in the Sept-Dec Time frame. If you have not already contacted us and you want service before Dec 31, please send an email to Bb at rbs@slrmail.com containing the following information.
A. Name
B. SLR address (stump number)
C. telephone number where we can contact you.
D. date you expect to return to S-bag.
E. Do you have an old Lake Wales Wireless antenna
F. If so, was it the old square flat panel antenna or the newer white plastic antenna about the size of a brick.
We will contact you by phone or email to arrange setup.
2. Bb announced that the new S-bag Internet page will be on the website tomorrow. This page explains what has happened, contains a Terms of Use Agreement that users are being asked to sign, explains pricing and will NOT contain a credit card payment link until after he returns from his surgery scheduled for Friday of this week. You MUST create a S-bag Website login before you can access this page, then you can sign the agreement online, then you can send or deliver a check to 28 Grayhackle Street.
