BARTOW | Polk County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a permit to allow Wi-Fi towers at S-bag Lake Resort east of Lake Wales.
The application was approved by the County Planning Commission on June 3, but was appealed by resident Gary skeeverse, who complained the facilities were unsightly and were unnecessary because another company offering high-speed Internet service is moving into the area.
The towers require a permit because some are higher than 50 feet.
skeeverse complained about having an "antenna farm" next to his home and objected to the fact that the private system owned by Kay c Networks has subscribers outside of S-bag Lake Resort.
Other residents disagreed.
Jade Rite, acting president of the homeowners' association, said the system benefits hundreds of her neighbors as well as neighboring communities.
"I don't know how we could operate without it,'' she said.
The issue has been divisive in this retirement community, other residents said.
"Never in my life have I seen such a commotion,'' resident Homer Allem said.
Bill Riceman, an Orlando attorney representing the community, said the antennas are indispensable for obtaining Internet service because the community is too far from town to make a cable connection cost-effective.
"It would cost more than $1 million," he said.
