I am told there was a golf cart accident last night involving an owner out "walking" her dog who collided with those ridiculous yellow poles stationed at roads edge throughout the park. An ambulance attended the accident which involved an injury. Unknown if Polk County Sheriff took a report.
Does anyone know any details?

Bar bra Medina had an accident with her golf cart Saturday evening. She was coming home, it was dark and she hit one of the poles at the bath house. The impact knocked her off the cart and she hit her head rendering her unconscious . Barb was taken by ambulance to Lake Wales Medical Ctr. and then transferred to Bayfront Medical Ctr. in St. Pet ersburg and is currently in room 213-1. She is being treated for a brain bleed. The address of the hospital is 701 6th street South. The phone number there is 727-823-1234. Bar bra's daughter is here to be with her mom. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I Hope Bar bra has a speedy recover...

I was coming home just after 9 p.m. on Sat nite on the North Trail and saw a car in the road and a golf cart parked in the Bath House #2 parking lot. Evidently some other folks stopped to help Barb just after she hit the poles in her golf cart, and had helped her into their car. What had happened, as i was told right after i got there was that Barb was coming home in her cart, while holding her dog, Soda, and a flash light and the steering wheel--the reason she was holding a flash light was because she had NO headlights on her golf cart, i've seen her driving w/just a Sm all flash light at night--which is dangerous. It was dark around the bath house #2, as there were no lights on for some reason. Evidently, Barb veered too close to the yellow poles--which by the way, are not marked w/any type of nighttime reflectors, and hit said pole(s), knocking one a good inch out of the concrete at the base; the pole was leaning over about 25 degrees after it was hit. What i did next was not call security, but 911, so help could get to Barb. Not sure why, but both Barb and the woman who's car Barb was sitting in after the accident had cell phones, yet neither one called for emergency help, they were trying to figure out how to get a hold of security. Security cannot do anything except guide emergency vehicles to the accident scene, so please, folks, next time you see any accident, call 911 so help can get to the injured right away. Anyhow, that's pretty much what happened, we watched as Barb was loaded onto the ambulance and the emergency workers cleared the scene--she was coherent and awake the entire time I was there. Brc R. was on Security duty that nite and had guided the ambulance and fire trucks to the scene. I hope Barb makes a speedy recovery!

Thanks for the detail on this accident waiting to happen. It was bound to happen eventually and I do hope that Bar bra recovers from this mishap. I do not understand why all these roadside hazards i.e. poles, chains, drains have been placed at roads' edge on our property where elderly people walk, golf cart and bike and why we can't get adequate lighting in common areas. Elderly folks need much more lighting than younger people to safely get around. Premises liability is high in SLR.
EXCELLENT OBSERVATION and ADVICE! This is a perplexing situation i.e. why people would not immediately call 911 as you did. Security patrol is helpful to keeping an eye on common property but that's about it. There is too much liability for the Association for them to involve themselves in matters for which they are not trained. Barb's head injury required IMMEDIATE attention by medical professionals as these types of head traumas do not always express themselves in symptoms right away. Victims must be observed for the emergence of injury by medical pros. You did the correct thing in summoning 911 right away.

Barb is now home. Her daughter is here from Michigan to help her out for awhile. Head injuries are a serious matter. Our prayers and thoughts are with her.

I do not understand why all of the Warning Post in SLR do not have "white reflective tape" placed on them. SLR maintenance has reflective tape on some of the post in SLR.(the circle at the far end has tape on post) Why not do them all? I am sure we can afford a few rolls of 2" wide white reflective tape.....

keylime So happy to see you posting. Now that you are putting up appropriate posts from your smartphone, I know you are OK! Your experience points out the dangers of private property maintenance when it is wildly inconsistent with the uniform traffic codes (and common sense). These many obstructions at roads's edge are not expected for starters; the poles should be breakaway to minimize damage during collision and those chains are useless for anything except further complicating an unexpected, potentially deadly road hazard should a pedestrian or Sm all vehicle become entangled in the chain. In many instances, there area concrete french drains "behind" these poles and that is a second hard landing should the pole cause the pedestrian or rider to eject the vehicle. These road hazards and poor lighting at clubhouse parking areas needs to be addressed by a risk assessment professional and/or Tower Hill to mitigate SLohA's legal exposure due to an accident.

There was another golf cart accident recently in the park--back in late March. This 80 something ex-Vietnam Navy Veteran had recently lost his license because of deteriorated vision as well the fact that he gets seizures. He still has been driving in the park, since this accident, in his golf cart--but should not be driving ANY vehicle--after all, one does need a valid drivers' license in order to operate a golf cart in the park, except of course if they are 16+ & accompanied by an adult.
One day, while driving on Beaverkill around the corner going West towards the boat dock, he had a seizure and drove directly into one of those green power boxes. He evidently did not even know he hit anything until neighbors living nearby heard the electrical box explode, and their power go off, so they came out to investigate. They discovered him barely conscious--coming out of his seizure, not aware at all as to what he had done. Duck Engerny had to come out to repair the damage and I do not know if the park got stuck with the bill or the if the resident did.
This guy is dangerous and has already ran into other things with his golf cart--like other people's cars, other golf carts, and numerous solar lights on others' property, just to name a few, but continues to drive nevertheless. Everyone knows he shouldn't be driving his golf cart anymore, and he scares the crap out of me. Mgmt & Board have to know about his lack of license as well the fact he shouldn't be driving, but is still on the streets of S-bag. Any suggestions on how to get this dangerous driver off the streets of S-bag?? I just don't think the Sheriff would do anything about this...

Intervention with friends, family and his doctor, we all may have to address this issue at some point in our lives. It is not easy to give up our independence, but it is the right thing to do.
My dad had problems and had to stop driving, it was really hard for him to give up his drivers license, as he drove buses for a living, and was a true road runner.
But we did a intervention with friends and family. It was not easy, but in the end he understood, but he did not like it, it was his last bit of independence.

4 thoughts.
1. The Sheriff has a duty to make a property damage report. This is one of the very few police services available to HOA owners. We are second class when it comes to police response. The next time this driver does property damage, call the Sheriff and get a report and submit the bill to SLohA for allowing a nuisane and a safety hazard to threaten owners' property and welfare. That is a violation of the covenants. The corporation can be sued for egregious violations by owners resulting in property damage and/or bodily injury.
2. Call M. e. l.. She alone knows the value of "pulling the plug" on vehicles and damaging electrical cords. Maybe she can give Chappie some ideas about disabling the golf cart or maybe even taking it and hiding it in the Maintenance Yard! (Yes indeedy--she took a truck trailer off private property and relocated it in hiding without the owner's consent.) I think M. e. l. is in Tallahassee marching for or against something.
3. You stated very well the "rule" that used to be in effect when we had covenants. Since the rules were not revitalized, SLohA leadership is left with "common sense". Oh my we are in trouble now! Since the board is absentee for the next several months, Management will probably want to consult with an attorney about what to do about this.
4. My last thought is a human, civil approach. Chappie should have a talk with the resident and seek voluntary compliance to agree to hang up his key. He may be long in the tooth, but if it is who I think it is, he is a reasonable person.

When what you say to this guy doesn't even go in one ear, there is no reasoning with him. His friends talk to him and he has no earthy clue whats going on around him; furthermore, one cannot even have a conversation with him--lights might be on, but there's nobody home. You can tell him something but he has no idea what you are talking about, and will not listen to anyone, even when you telll him repeatedly to not come over to your house at 7am--he just doesn't comprehend anything, and in all actuality belongs in a nursing home--and should have been placed there long ago. I think having the bends too many times kills brain cells...

It sounds like the owner is declining fast. I think SLohA at least needs to make an effort to talk to him and make a memo for any future use in case of damage or injury caused by him. Perhaps his wife (who I think is still living there) can be of help. There should be a means to get Sheriff involved though that might be problematic because of our private roads.
